A while ago I came across a write-up by a mathematician who strongly disagrees with how math was being taught in school. The introduction is a good summation of the entire thing (through an analogy about painting and music), but the whole thing is worth a read as well.

The pdf version: http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdf
The html version (off of google's server): click here

I tutor math and I believe that this is true in most math classes. A lot of people do not seem to understand what they're doing, but only do so because they understand the prescribed steps. So many of them do not even think about why the things they study work.

I read the analogy of a painter.... humorous stuff, really way-out-there abstract stuff man

Very nice. If only teachers could be teachers rather than industrial cogs.

Brilliant! Every math teacher should read it.

I'm really surprised that I liked math when I was going to school.
