I was thinkin about the features of the being that Parmenides discovered. Let's take a look:
I's's motionless, because if it can move, It will be in a point were ti wasn't at first, so we have to say that the being wasn't, and this is impossible. There is only one being: if there are two, one can't be the other, and this is impossible. It's ethernal: if there are some moments when it doesn't exists anymore or yet, in these moments it can't be, and this is a contradiction. It's indivisible: if it is, it need the not being as element of separation, and there will be two beings, and that is impossible. Now I try to apply the same features to the not being: It's motionless, because if tou have nothing, what can you move? There is only one not being: a separation need the being as element of separation, and so you don't have a perfect idea of not being anymore, because you put being between two not beings. It's ethernal: if there are some moments when it exists, in these moments there is not an absolute not being, and we don't want this. What do you think about what I wrote? Do you think there are some mistakes? |

One wise sage proclaimed 'there is no motion!'.
The other stood and started to walk in front of him. Nice avatar. Very nice. If you change it I want it stay observable for others that is why I attach it. The asymmetry in distribution of the bubbles moving inside at center is very interesting. Attached image(s)

Those are not bubbles in the centre, I'm afraid!
If you look closely you will see that one minute they are there and then they disappear, only for new 'bubbles' to appear. This avatar represents Politicians and Bankers going round in never-ending circles trying to find all the money that has has disappeared from the Globe into who-knows-whose pockets. |

At least, someone decided to visit this section of the forum!
Maybe there are too many sections, and some of ths are uselsess, don't you think so? One wise sage proclaimed 'there is no motion!'. The other stood and started to walk in front of him. Nice avatar. Very nice. Hmm, I think that you don't really like Parmenides, isn't it? But you have to agree to the fact tht parmenidians matters are logical, and it's impossible to contradict him, I think. The problem is how can nature appear so different to the logical contruction of Parmenides. Anyway, I think that the modern phisycs has much in common with parmenidian thougt than with the epicurean and atomistic thought. Think about the fact that matter is energy, and energy is something diffuse in space, so there are not little balls, little units of being, but an unique "sea" of matter-energy. Thanks for the avatar, I think even your is nice,I like Alice I thought it represented the element Lithium!!! LOL!!! I like it representing politicians better! What is it Little Grass-hopper? Hehe, I don't know what it is, really, but probably it's "only" the fruit of someone's imagination I like it because of the association of colours, and because of the motion that has something harmonic, and so beautiful |

And how do you fit the illusions within perception where one perceives something that doesn't really exist, and also fails to perceive that which does exist? Where does authority exist in the determining factor and how does authority define being?

About the best I can do is give examples. Right now, it seems to defy definition.
Examples of things that exist: My body. My consciousness (sensations, thoughts, awareness). Anything that has mass. Energy (photons, heat, kinetic energy). Things that do not exist: Unicorns. Abraham Lincoln (although he did exist at one time). Pure number or shape (mathematical objects (Plato believed otherwise, but he was wrong)). |

Where does authority exist in the determining factor and how does authority define being? Hmm...I think I don't understand... Anyway I try to reply: If you think that something exist but it doesn't really exist, in any case the tought of the thing exist. All the matters of our writing in this forum, and every knowledge that we have, are only things that have come at a certain time under the eye of our consciousness. Do you know solipsysm? We don't know if something exist or not, but we know that it exist in our minds. defining being and not being? These are my answers: being is what exists not being is what not exist Your definitions? What doesn't exist IS in a non-existing state. Is it not? Yes |

We don't know if something exist or not, but we know that it exist in our minds. solipsism noun 1. Philosophy. the theory that only the self exists, or can be proved to exist. 2. extreme preoccupation with and indulgence of one's feelings, desires, etc.; egoistic self-absorption. Philosophy 1. The theory that the self is the only thing that can be known and verified. 2. The theory or view that the self is the only reality. Knowing the Self helps in determining what is real and what is created from the mind of ego or the extreme preoccupation with and indulgence of one's feelings, desires, etc.; egoistic self-absorption. Proof if relative to the ego may be relative to individual belief. However if the Self is the only One, proof lies within the individual perceptions of the self absorbed ego and is the basis for the creation of individual perceptions, or thoughts of individuality and it's manufacture of beliefs in reality. |

What is kinetic energy? If I raise a one pound weight up one foot off the floor, I have stored a foot-pound of potential energy. If I then drop the weight, it has a foot pound of kinetic energy when it hits the floor, producing a nice dent which your wife then complains about. The dent represents the destructive kinetic energy of one foot pound. Of course, kinetic energy has constructive uses too. For example, windmills convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy. I thought biologists had to learn some basic physics in high school. |

Then you would benefit in discovering the nature of the Self. After that might come understanding.
