I had a dream where my grandmother told me if my left hand itched I would receive, and if the right hand did, I would be giving away. I was reminded of this when I won 80 dollars off of 5 on a slot machine, I cashed in my ticket, and suddenly had an urge to scratch my left hand. Now, I didn't pay attention to an itch before hand, I know my grandma has a gambling problem in real life, and I'll be testing this out in the future; even though I don't feel that lucky...

How about you?

Do you feel lucky punk? Do you? etc..

I think luck is only ever brought up after something 'lucky' happens. Luck is only good or bad if you have a scenario that it effects. If you don't care about the scenario, then luck ceases to have any meaning.

I recently read this about TPratchetts book Nation and the inspiration behind it:

Two families lived next door to each other. The boy of one family and girl from another were going to be wed and they'd invited all the distant family. Everyone arrived on time, except a cousin who was coming from Australia and would arrive early the next morning. During the night bombs were dropped that totally destroyed both houses and both familes.

The cousin arrived the next morning and was distraught; instead of a joyous arrival, he was treated with death and destruction of everything he held dear and was left scrambling in the rubble for signs of life, which never appeared.

Now the 9 year old Mr. Pratchett thought it was a tragedy (as most would), but he also realised that the cousin must have been having immensely conflicting emotions. He was witness to an extremely unlucky event, but at the same time he was extremely lucky to be alive. What are you supposed to feel in those circumstances? Its really all down to individual perception. What we would call a tragedy is almost always a miracle if you look at it from another angle.

As for you Grandma, well maybe the croupier who collected lost chips always sat on her right! wink.gif

Some use a rabit's foot, but Charles Stross in The Atrocity Archives makes the case that a monkey's hand is much more powerful.

I would hope it'd bring negative luck! When people see you with a human hand, they'll assume you slaughtered someone, and then you'll end up on the end of Her Majesties pitch fork. If you're lucky, you'll get life imprisonment, and if not you'll get the electric chair or a very sore neck. If you try and capitalise on the lucky hand, your fellow casino gamblers may notice the smell lol.

I once had a rabbits foot. I was only 10 but I was aware that it couldn't be that lucky or the rabbit would have got away, especially since it had 4 of them smile.gif

I think it's a bit odd that if one has no bad luck, one feels one has been lucky, ie., had good luck!

True! And what about when John Doe has a car accident. If he comes out with just a broken leg he will probalby accredit it to the lord that he came out unscathed. But then, I've always wonder what was the lord thinking to let him get into the car accident in the first place!

Or how about lucky to be born in a country where we can afford to eat everyday, have clean drinking water, accessible education and healthcare.

When you think about it, you have about a 1/5 chance of it happening.

George Bush was lucky to be born with a million dollar trust fund. He was lucky to be bankrolled in several business that he failed. He was lucky to have Karl Rove get him elected Governor of Texas. Lucky to have the Republican Party back him for President. Lucky to have the Swift Boat Liars to help get him re-elected. Now he's going down in history as the worst president ever. Is that really lucky? Maybe it's luckier to work for everything you have like I did.

And in a hundred years he'll be dead and forgotten like everyone else. Or if he is remembered, he'll be known as the bastard president who ruined the world.

man last night i guess you could say that we were somewhat lucky. we won a few times but in general i dont think that gambling is a good measure of luck. id say its more like having good friends and someone to talk to.

Surely one should be 'good lucky', else being 'lucky' might be 'bad lucky', if you get my drift.
