I was always curious, what do atheists/agnostics do on Christsmass?

Do they celebrate it or not? And if they do, wouldn't such a gross display of superstition go against their non-believes?

Christmas is good for seeing family, and great for making lower-middle class children depressed.

Favourite Christmas carol of atheists:
1. Hark the herald angels sing; funny, I don't hear a thing.

2. Away with the manger, no crib and no bed... biggrin.gif

Dis, if you are serious about your signature, how come you avoid dialoguing with me about what we can do with the use of CCC to make for social justice?

Yes, but the whole point of Christsmass is the resurrection of Christ and the religious symbology behind it (forgiveness, love, etcetera).

How can you celebrate something if that something means nothing to you?

because life itself is cause enough for celebration. There's no need to believe in the resurrection of christ or other christian myths to celebrate the festivities of christmas or other religious holidays.

Absolutely right. The symbolism of Christmas can have many meanings, including the historic core meaning of the return of the sun from its journey south on the day of the winter solstice. Keep it secular, but keep the fun.

I thought the whole idea of Christmas was really created by poets. I don't even know a damn thing about St. Nicholas, but I sure know about Santa.

... I don't... know a damn thing about St. Nicholas, but I sure know about Santa.

'Santa Claus' is a corruption of the SantaNichlaus--the way the NY Dutch pronounced the Saint's name.
Here is a short version of who SN was:

More detailed and scholarly version:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas
This is interesting. It compares Santa with the Saint:

The role of the political caricaturist, Thomas Nast (1860's):

It is said the TN did his drawing after reading the poem by the Rev. Clement Moore, written for his ill child:
