I was always curious, what do atheists/agnostics do on Christsmass?
Do they celebrate it or not? And if they do, wouldn't such a gross display of superstition go against their non-believes? |

I thought the whole idea of Christmas was really created by poets. I don't even know a damn thing about St. Nicholas, but I sure know about Santa.

... I don't... know a damn thing about St. Nicholas, but I sure know about Santa. 'Santa Claus' is a corruption of the SantaNichlaus--the way the NY Dutch pronounced the Saint's name. Here is a short version of who SN was: http://www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix?pageID=38 More detailed and scholarly version: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Nicholas This is interesting. It compares Santa with the Saint: http://www.stnicholascenter.org/printable_...6&smpl_sakey=16 The role of the political caricaturist, Thomas Nast (1860's): http://cartoons.osu.edu/nast/santa_camp.htm It is said the TN did his drawing after reading the poem by the Rev. Clement Moore, written for his ill child: http://www.christmas-tree.com/stories/nigh...echristmas.html |
