As far as I can see what you have to offer is mainly ego stroking. Is that ad hominem? Well, then, we are involved in a team effort. Nice working with ya.

I think Chip is a disturbed individual, probably in his teens, who came here with his own agenda that included trolling, and which explains much of his odd postings and derogatory remarks. Reminds me in many ways of Cybert. Unfortunately for Chip, but fortunate for everyone else, he will not be carrying out his agenda here.

I assume by "fate" you mean chance.

Nuh uhh, honest to goodness fate. Chance for me is an agnostic view of the world, i've gone too far down my particular path to hedge my bets ;0)

Do you have anything positive to say about anyone on this forum.... It would be a nice break without your sensless jibberish around here for a while.

Take a break, preferably a long one, and maybe don't come back.

Can you describe your hypothetical mechanism for the operation of fate?

Wha!?!

Not sure I can Rick; I can talk about the situations I find myself in, describe the effect that they have on me and the problems they pose, I can explain the relationship of fate and my resulting state of affairs, and how the act of fate slowly changes my view of how things in the multiverse sit. Is that any good to you? If so, you might want to spend some time reading my website.

If however your request for a hypothetical mechanism is just a lazy call out and dare for me to quantify my belief in a scientific way, then you're barking up the wrong tree here ;0)

I'm not sure how to get to your Website (no link from your info page).

Curiosity is the very distinguishing feature by which some of us recognize kindrid spirits. It would be interesting to know if a person who "believed" in fate had some coherent accounting for it.

Carl Jung had a vague notion of "synchronicity" that seems from a personal point of view to possibly have some validity, but it goes against a scientific viewpoint.

Agreed, i can't sum it up in a few words however, and would any number of words do it for you? Surely this is one of those lessons that must be learnt by oneself.

Lately I've been on this kick about being "evidence based." How can I criticize violent religions for not being evidence based if I'm not evidence based myself?

Belief in fate implies a denial of free will, and I think I've put myself, in other threads here, squarely on the side of freedom. Otherwise, how can one have a consistent ethics?

I had a friend once who said to me "If I can't explain it to you so that you can understand it, it means I don't understand it well enough myself." So I tend to work on explanations (not that I am all that successful at times).

Indeed, the great Leonardo never believed anything that could not be proven through empirical fact. And even when it was proven, he did his own experiments to double check, maybe it is this lack of taking someones word for it that made him so far ahead of everyone else.

Maybe we should stop blindly believing nothing can go faster than light and do indepth analysis before coming to conclusions? I think the problem nowadays is people are taught in schools, what the teacher says is right... and the teacher isnt always right.

I completely agree with your statement, i feel exactly the same about things that are taught and have demanded that of many teachers myself. Trouble is though, you really can teach plain truths to people until the cows come home, and they won't believe you, it takes a student that listens, doesn't mind being patronised, and overall won't get offended.

So I seem to find myself in the role of a teacher, not I role I relish or want. Joyful sharing among friends is my bag ;0)

Awesome, go find out and prove it to yourself :0) I have conducted my experiments, reached my conclusions and now am in a state of belief, in myself.

Is what based in scientific theory and evidence? My belief?

I don't have fancy MRI equipment at my disposal, and loathed to donate my brian to science right now for disection, so all i've got is my writing. Evidence of a sort, a log of events if you will ;0)

In regards to the OP:

I haven't seen The Secret, but I did see What the Bleep Do We Know and guess its of a similar vein. I absolutely agree that if you want something then you should go for it and expect a LOT of work. Its easy to become disheartened and distracted when the weight of your choice dawns on you, but this is what separates the cream from the crap.

But although I agree, in principal, in hard work and practise makes perfect, there is an element of timing and intuition that I feel is important. Passion for your work (or study) and belief in yourself are worth more than the proverbial gold you may be seeking...
