Quite a simple question, where do you think the next big advances in science will take place and why?

Me: Nanoscience, essentially going to change the world in so many many ways. From curing cancer with gold nanoparticles to building structures using self-assembling catoms aka artificial atoms which works sort of similar to how supramolecular chemistry works and in some ways cellular biology. Even phones which shift shape, capable of going from a wrist watch to a iphone shape to a laptop shape, all with the push of a button, this is not science fiction, its nanoengineering. I think its the future.

Few examples of things going on right now:

Quantum dots that can be used in microchips for semiconductors on the scale of 1-5nm

Gold nanoparticles to identify and kill cancer cells (lots of research still needs to be done on the effects of nanotechnology on the human body, even simple C60 molecules and carbon nanotubes may have adverse effects)

Self-healing materials to repair damage automatically to walls, clothing, etc.

Highly flexible bullet proof material

Silver based anti-bacterial gels to speed healing in wounds

Where do you think the next big advances in science will be seen?

Of course I would like to say the next great advances will come from discoveries made by researchers at the lhc!

Ah great point, we could indeed see some earth shattering developments come out of the LHC

Could you have possibly meant 'what's the next big technological development'? If so, then I agree! I have been picking up a lot of chatter across numerous channels regarding the rapid growth in the nano sector!

but that also reminds me of nanarchy .... buffer ahead to the 13 min mark for a humorous take on possible nanotechnological uses
