Reality's Virgin Kiss

To understand wonder as
An unadulterated child
What lightning by thunder has
Taught me has brought me to the wild

Where instead of frightening
This child finds it enlightening
Under flashing crashing sky
To wonder as the storm goes by

No wire can bear its fire though
So when it goes by the lights go
Too and through it all offline
But then the rainbow comes to shine

What lightning by thunder said
Not frightened enlightened instead
A child of wild reality

Riding the world flying through the universe
It could be better but it could be worse

I remember a conflicted minister
Whose pious face masked something sinister
That he did not share but we knew it was there
Weeping weirdly through his pastoral prayer

As if he were speaking to somebody who
Knew better and maybe knew what to do
But who was reluctant to help him again
I was a child when it was awkward then

Before I was kicked out of the junior choir
I saw his bald head turn red and catch fire
As though he were embarrassed to have been
Losing my religion maybe that was when

My mother said to keep my eyes closed and
Wait for it to pass but try to understand
But when I could I understood and I
Could see the lie he would project on the sky

He needed to stop talking and to see
If he could start walking if he would be free
But he never did as he hid away
What thrilled him but killed him and was anyway

Actually how could it be better than this
Moment of now reality's virgin kiss?

I never grew up but knew
Who I was and what I would do
And here is where to do it
Where I am at it and to it

When I was left to wonder
I saw lightning and heard thunder
Then I wanted to know more
What became what I came here for

Gone to come through the storm here
When the stars dance diamond clear
On blue velvet over me
Unadulteratedly free

What lightning by thunder has
Taught me has brought me reconciled
To understand wonder as
An unadulterated child
